About EHS
Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) at the 勛圖厙 supports the University’s higher education, R1 research, and service mission by promoting a productive but safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible campus. We partner with students, faculty, staff, to help ensure that learning, work and R1 research and other campus activities are conducted in ways that minimize risk, prevent injury and illness, and protect the natural environment.
Our approach emphasizes personal availability, collaboration, education, and continuous improvement. We prioritize prevention, data‑driven decisions, and clear, but realistic standards. By providing personal guidance, training, and practical solutions, EHS strives to integrate effective safety and sustainability practices into campus operations.
Our Mission
The mission of Environmental Health & Safety is to foster a culture of safety, health, and environmental stewardship across the 勛圖厙. We do this by supporting regulatory compliance, reduction of hazards, and empowering the campus community with the knowledge and tools needed to work safely and responsibly.
Our Philosophy
Safety at the 勛圖厙 is a shared responsibility. EHS works best when the campus community is actively engaged. identifying hazards, following safe practices, and communicating concerns. We are committed to being a helpful, accessible resource—focused not only on compliance, but on practical risk reduction and problem-solving.
What We Do
EHS provides a wide range of services to support campus activities, including:
- Occupational Safety & Health - Workplace safety and compliance programs, industrial hygiene capabilities, hazard & exposure assessments, and injury prevention, hazardous waste and emergency response.
- Laboratory Safety & Chemical Management - Support for safe and regulatory compliant laboratory practices, chemical inventory management & spill response, chemical and waste disposal.
- Environmental Protection & Sustainability Support - Guidance on university-wide chemical and environmental compliance waste management, Chemical, supply and Re-use programs.
- Biosafety & Radiation Safety - Oversight, assistance and management for biological and radiological materials & processes, including radiation-producing equipment, radiological source use/handling, and disposal.
- Fire & Life Safety - Fire prevention, emergency preparedness support, and coordination with campus and local responders, including AED oversight and management.
- Training & Outreach - We coordinate and provide safety compliance training programs, consultations, and resources such as process and chemical SOPs tailored to campus needs.
Working With EHS
We encourage ongoing communication with EHS when planning new projects, research activities, facility changes, or special events. Our staff is available to consult, answer questions, and help identify solutions that support both safety and operational goals.
